I love fluff. The word fluff is just fun to say and write. I love the way fluff feels. More importantly, I have a cat and he’s fluff-to-perfection! Holding him, sinking my hands into his fur transports me to fluff heaven.
Fluff as a business strategy? Not so much.
Often, hours can be used creating business cards, attending webinars and reading Facebook conversations which is great learning and too often random-fluffed-up.
The harder tasks of networking, meeting with others to ask if they know anyone who needs our services/products or creating content which connects to ideal clients are avoided.
As a business owner and especially if you’re just starting a business, you want to focus your time and attention on the important tasks and projects which make money or lead to making money.
Avoiding the activities that are on the fluffy side of your business priorities can be challenging. (Believe me, I know. Fluff is so comfy.)

Let’s get to it and do it!
#1– Look inside the box and define what’s important to you.
I heard David Perdew’s ideas on creating a decision matrix in one of those 20-minute free lectures online. Instead of thinking “outside the box”, he says, the real treasure to think about is inside the box… and that real treasure is you. 💛
Business decisions aren’t to be made randomly. They stem from a more complete understanding of what’s important to you... for your business and life!
#2– Take a sheet of paper and draw a box. Insert a heart. Yes, that heart represents you!
Think while doing this: What is my treasure? How will I find it? How will I protect it?
#3– Label the top horizontal edge of the box: Core Values. This is WHO you are.
These are the beliefs you hold inside which cannot be violated around relationships, money, business, health, play/fun and well-being.
Examples include: I will do my part to maintain intellectual, physical and emotional health. I believe all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Friends, family and business relations should know they can trust me to do what I say I will do.
#4– Label the left edge of the box: Vision. Your potential possibility.
Without a clear vision, you don’t have a destination, without a destination you have no direction and without a direction you’re stuck where you are.
My vision example: I have scheduled 5 hours of coaching with up and coming executives and/or entrepreneurs. There’s a lot of variety and challenge in our work, creativity, honest interaction, humor, uber learning and of course fantastic results. I’m free and flexible to work with people and projects which I believe I can add some value. My income exceeds $xxxx.xx monthly.
Start with a simple vision statement…
I have 5 coaching hours scheduled a week. And then what?
I’m keeping the work I love and letting go of the work that’s tedious. And then what?
I’m having more fun and inspired to start new projects. And then what?
I’m having meaningful conversations in beautiful places, coaching 10 hours. And then what?
Got it? Now, it’s your turn.
#5– Label the right edge of the box: Guiding Principles. Choose two words that sum up WHY it’s important to you. Nifty, isn’t it?
For example, mine are Freedom and Variety. I cherish both.
#6– Label the bottom horizontal edge of the box: Future State. This is about knowing what you don’t want as much as what you do want. It represents your happiness and joy.
It’s a result of a combination of the other 3 edges. You’re building an image in your mind of where you want to be… how you get there exactly… you’re not supposed to know yet.
For example, I want to be free and relate to others in some way that is mutually meaningful. I don’t ever want to live with apathy about self, others, my community or the world. I stay actively involved and informed, always doing my part to uplift others while fiercely working to eliminate barriers and cruelty to all around the world, especially women, children and animals.
#7–If it’s not HELL YEAH, it’s NO BLOOMIN’ WAY!
