Make this your first inventory of the new year.

Why?

Because the holiday rush and emotional high is over.

As busy people with stressful (and exciting) home and work lives we can get caught up and lose ourselves in the throes of activity and expectations.

To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.  ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Being YOU is your most important asset.

A personal inventory can highlight areas for your future attention.

With the natural energy a new year brings, it’s a terrific time to do some personal reflection and come home to you.

In this article:

You’ll get to review your alignment with 7 important areas of living. Are there tweaks to make so your alignment becomes a truer YOU?

Let’s find out!

An Inventory Just for YOU

Directions: Clear your mind by taking a few deep breaths. Invite your core self (the raw, perfectly imperfect YOU) to answer the questions.

Assign a number (1-7) which matches how TRUE the statement feels to you:

Completely FALSE= 1— 2 — 3 — 4 — 5 — 6 — 7= Completely TRUE!

1) I have a living environment which adds energy rather than drains my energy. I keep clutter to a minimum ; I update and throw out clothes I don’t wear or like; my car is washed and tidy.

2) I have a work environment which adds energy rather than drains my energy. I keep clutter to a minimum; I update technology; files are organized; things work smoothly most of the time; relationships are positive; my motivation level is a hell yeah!

3) I keep up with my financial life. I know how much money I earn; what I spend money on; keep up with bills; know my credit score; plan for my future.

4) I take care of my body, mind and soul with healthy food and lifestyle habits.  I nourish my body with good, quality food which enhances my concentration, mood, and overall physical health; I feel strong and fit mentally and physically due to good sleeping habits; I take responsibility for my health.

5) I’m bringing my best effort to my relationships. I don’t take others for granted; I confront and if necessary eliminate relationships with people who bring me down; I’m honest and respectful to others and myself!

6) I know what I value and have a sense of life purpose. I know what I stand for and what matters to me; I self-correct and live congruently with my values.

7) I use time efficiently and effectively. I have an approach to managing time which works; I get the important things done with extra room for unexpected tasks which pop up. I minimize time wasters. I make time for work, play and love.

Now comes the JOYFUL part.

Choose an area to strengthen so it’s a truer YOU.

For example: Let’s say #1- I have a living environment that adds energy scored a 4.

Question: What would need to take place so it would be a 5?

Response: Eliminate clutter—like books and clothes we don’t use anymore.

Question: What would need to take place so it would be a 6? or a 7?

See? Joy is happening– it’s within reach!

Inviting a friend to help could make the job go faster and sprinkle fun into the mix by going out to lunch together after you drop off your donation to Goodwill.

Perhaps a song will bring a smile– Whistle While You Work or A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down always does it for me– sometimes Hallelujah from the Messiah– it’s a vocal work-out with all those parts!

Question: When will you start? Who will help you be accountable? (And have fun celebrating your success!)

Who says joy only comes with wrapped gifts and Happy New Year horns?

Some sweat, maybe tears, elbow grease and determination to tweak or restart if needed brings a deep, personal satisfaction.

Trust me.  I’ve checked it out.

Here’s your takeaway:

Reach out for joy in the new year by being true to yourself– one area of your life at a time.

It’s great to be YOU– truly.

Happy New Year!

Let’s get together, share a pot of coffee (or gallon of water- make that sparkling) and talk about how you will reach for joy in 2018.
